It was the worst possible speech you could have made.
North Koreans have been told since they could walk that Americans are baby killers. There are countless paintings of Americans killing peaceful North Koreans -- and ones of Americans being bayoneted by North Korean soldiers. You are reinforcing their education.
Here is the speech you should have made:
"North Korean citizens, you have been told many lies. The US and South Korea did not invade your country on June 25, 1950. Your country invaded in force with a large number of tanks. It was such an egregious attack that many UN countries agreed to defend South Korea. Then after UN forces approached the Yalu river, China intervened in force because it did not want the US military near its border. The war ended where it began, near the 38th parallel.
Over the years, the North Korean government has murdered many innocent people. It shot down KAL flight 858 with 115 people on board. One of the two bombers lives in South Korea today and has shared her story, not to mention her pain at the thought of being responsible for so many deaths. Her book is titled, The Tears of My Soul.
China is using North Korea as a buffer zone. China does not care if you live or die, witnessed by the fact that it deports all North Korean refugees back to the DPRK, to certain torture, imprisonment, or execution, even though it has signed multiple UN treaties forbidding exactly that treatment of refugees.
Contrary to what you have been told, the US does not want to be in Korea. We would rather spend our money at home. Our military is only there because the leader of the DPRK -- first Kim Il-sung, then Kim Jong-il, and now Kim Jong-un -- has always wanted to reunify the peninsula under DPRK terms, meaning that instead of 120,000-200,000 political prisoners in labor camps, there might be millions.
The proof of this is Japan, which was our sworn enemy in WWII. Today they are just one of many countries with which the US has friendly relations, along with Germany and the other former members of the Axis.
We realize it is a difficult task we ask you to do -- eliminate Kim Jong-un -- given the many layers of security he has. But as soon as you do that, you will be free to buy Samsung televisions, watch South Korean soap operas, listen to K-pop, and speak with your family and friends without fear of being sent to a labor camp.
The parents of the current president of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, were from North Korea. He honestly wants the entire Korean peninsula to be a successful and free country.
The US also wants North Koreans to be free to decide their own fate."
